Apple and Samsung have refreshed their flagship tablets for the first time since 2014. Much has changed in the space — mostly for the worse, as overall sales have continued to slip. There’s room for debate as far as precisely how down the overall market is, but there seems to at least be a consensus that early predictions of the tablet space eclipsing PCs missed the mark. Scott and Steve met when they were PhD students in the Cell and Molecular Biology Program at Colorado State University. They were both researching algae projects related to biofuels and bioproducts. In late 2013, it was brought to their attention that the majority of printing ink used in the world are produced from toxic petroleum products. This inspired them to use algae as biopigments for the world’s most sustainable ink.
Introducing the future of ink. We have developed two types of algae ink:
1. SAVING THE WORLD ink. Sustainable algae derived ink that is 100% plant-based, renewable and biodegradable. The majority of the ink is algae, grown in our lab, turned into ink, applied to paper. Just like regular petroleum ink, but without the petroleum.
2. FUN SCIENCE ink. The world’s first time-lapse ink that allows you to write, sketch, draw, or paint your story over time. The magic happens when the ink literally grows when exposed to light.

The idea for Indosole was conceived on a surf trip to Bali, Indonesia in 2004. A couple of young Californians were struck by the environmental issues faced by Indonesians, and inspired by an unusual pair of sandals they found there. By combining these two things, they created a unique solution to the problem of pollution in Indonesia in the form of a product that was both fashionable and functional.
RE-PURPOSE: With “Re-purposed” products, Indosole offers the most organic, toxic free and environmentally sustainable production process. There is no melting down, off gassing, or reforming of any material—just strong hands and minds.
RE-IMAGINE: “Repurposing” is an art of transformation. We learned this from our commitment to the local Balinese crafts people, the wise and resourceful artisans who taught us that waste could be reimagined, transformed into something purposeful. Through our strong relationship, we have saved thousands of tires from overflowing and overcrowded Indonesian landfills. And the thing is, we’ve only started to get our hands dirty. The more tires we save means a lower production of tire-derived fuel on the island, less landfills; and also, more shoes, more ideas, and an altogether healthier way of living.
RE-BIRTH: To enhance every aspect of your life, Indosole uses only locally sourced and animal free materials during its transformation of waste into fashionable and functional items. It is our dream to provide you with footwear that not only eliminates waste, but also, can give it a new life. Please join us on our quest to save 1 million waste tires from Indonesian landfills.

Ventura County STEM (VC STEM) connects Ventura County students, families, community members, teachers and STEM professionals with resources and educational opportunities to improve educational outcomes in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
VC STEM is a collaborative interdisciplinary community working to foster the development of tomorrow’s STEM leaders. Our goal is to encourage our students to be curious and engaged, and ensure that they are prepared, able and ready to become the STEM workforce and leaders of tomorrow.
VC STEM is an initiative of the Ventura County P-20 Regional Council with California State University Channel Islands serving as the primary lead under Professor of Chemistry and Faculty Director of STEM Initiatives, Dr. Phil Hampton.
The Science Fair brings together students, teachers, and scientists from around the county to: Develop in students an awareness of the importance of science in their lives and to cultivate students’ interest in science; Support students’ acquisition of scientific knowledge and research skills; Extend and reinforce the Science Content Standards for California Public Schools; Recognize and reward outstanding achievement in science; and Motivate students to undertake and complete scientific inquiries in their special areas of interest.
It is held at the Ventura County Fairgrounds.

The Challenge: It seemed improbable to compete directly with a Chinese-based industry representing 98% of the global market. It seemed impossible to manufacture engineered bamboo materials in the US where no viable feedstocks had yet been commercially established. It seemed impractical to begin building an entirely new bamboo economy in the US under such circumstances. It was exhilarating to overcome such challenges and solve the puzzle.
The Solution: Bamboo is a giant “grass.” “GRASSBuilt™” stands not only for bamboo being a giant grass, but also for “Green Renewable Affordable Sustainable Systems.” GRASSBuilt™ is the result of multiple disciplines collaborating together and solving a macro-puzzle. GRASSBuilt™ has engineered proprietary manufacturing systems which can produce commercial-grade, structurally engineered, bamboo billets up to 60′ x 4′ x 9 1/2″ complimenting the latest advancements in tall-wood construction techniques. the bamboo engineered material made by GRASSBuilt™ carries performance values beyond any engineered building materials ever produced from organic feedstocks — taking advantage of the extreme well-known tensile strength found within bamboo fibers. GRASSBuilt™ is the result of American Ingenuity. GRASSBuilt™: “This Changes Everything.”
Let’s rethink how we create and design the world around us. It’s time to support the New American Bamboo Economic Revolution: NABER. Every time you purchase GRASSBuilt™ materials you support a new American industry assuring high-quality and American standards. This is the beginning of an American legacy we will proudly pass down for generations to come.
