pH Living was founded on the principles of healthy design and sustainable building practices. Naperville (November 10, 2017) – TEDxNaperville is an annual free-thinking conference that brings the brightest minds of Chicagoland and beyond to Naperville to share ideas worth spreading. The conference will be held Nov. 10 from 1pm-7pm at the Yellow Box, Naperville.

Since its inaugural conference in 2010, they’ve become the longest-running independent TED conference in the Midwest with well over 1 million talk views and thousands of previous attendees. “It’s the Lollapalooza of ideas,” says TEDxNaperville founder and curator Arthur Zards, “we bring a very unique and diverse group of thought leaders to challenge your perceptions.”

Mission

The Nyle DiMarco Foundation is a non-profit organization that exists as a national philanthropic resource for all organizations, institutions and individuals working to improve the lives of every Deaf person in the world.

Current Priority Area: Deaf Children and their Families

The Foundation aims to improve access to accurate, research-based information about early language acquisition–specifically, the bilingual education approach. Through the early intervention process, the child’s language and literacy development should be the focal point.

Nyle and the Foundation are guided by the principle that every child deserves love and language.

Because the reality is that Deaf children can grow to be anything they want: firefighter or police officer, defense attorney or brain surgeon, elementary teacher or college professor, software developer or the creator of the next major social media outlet–or even an internationally recognized supermodel, actor, and dancing phenom. The key to unlocking a Deaf child’s future is acquiring language at an early age.

Nyle’s story provides validation: he was born into a multigenerational Deaf family and was taught American Sign Language and English from birth.

One of the Foundation’s objectives is to improve access to resources and information for parents of Deaf children and their families, so that when parents have these questions, they know where they can find answers.

Through partnerships with national organizations, such as Language Equality and Acquisition for Deaf Kids (LEAD-K), the Foundation promotes awareness on issues surrounding the importance of early language and literacy in Deaf children. The Foundation’s partnerships emphasize culturally-based, community-engaged, and innovative approaches in providing support and guidance to Deaf children and their families.

An IoT Enabled Real-time Physical Therapy Monitoring Platform

Rep Watch provides wearable technology that tracks physical therapy and fitness activities and a mobile app that helps users stay on track during injury rehabilitation and workouts

The brain child of co-founders Robert Kyler, Alexis Schomer, John Ikudaisi, RepWatch originated as a Startup Weekend Ventura County 2016 IoT application project created to foster efficient and successful recovery for patients involved in physical therapy programs. By combining different technologies and a user-friendly platform, RepWatch keeps physical therapists and patients connected via a real-time, wireless data stream to facilitate active monitoring of the patient’s condition and progress.

ASU Innovation Open finalists announced; groups will compete for $100,000 top prize, and RepWatch is one of them.

CREATING JOBS THAT LIFT PEOPLE OUT OF POVERTY

The Empowerment Plan is a Detroit based nonprofit organization focused on permanently elevating families from the generational cycle of homelessness. We hire single parents from local shelters and provide them with training and full-time employment as seamstresses so that they can earn a stable income, find secure housing, and regain their independence. The individuals we hire manufacture a coat designed to meet the needs of those in the homeless community. The durable EMPWR Coat can transform into a sleeping bag at night or an over- the-shoulder bag when not in use. Since 2012, we have provided employment to 34 homeless individuals—all of whom have now secured permanent housing for themselves and their families —and distributed over 15,000 coats to those in need across the U.S. and Canada.

Our founder and CEO, Veronika Scott, was inspired to start The Empowerment Plan when a class at The College for Creative Studies in Detroit challenged her to create a product to fill an actual need in her community. Veronika took to the issue of homelessness and began spending time at a nearby warming center where the design for the EMPWR coat was born. While conducting her research, Veronika was angrily confronted by a homeless woman who stated that she did not need a coat—she needed a job. This is the moment that shaped the innovative business practices The Empowerment Plan would adopt upon establishment.

The Empowerment Plan is predominantly supported by donations from private individuals, large corporations and foundations. We also would not be able to accomplish all that we do without the help of local organizations. The Coalition On Temporary Shelter (COTS) assists us with employee recruitment and childcare needs. As our employees successfully transition from homelessness, Humble Design provides our seamstresses with appropriate furnishings and amenities for their new homes. Partners such as Pro-Literacy Detroit, Level One Bank, COTS, and 2-Way Communications LLC provide our seamstresses with on-the-clock, supplemental programming including GED courses, financial literacy classes, professional development seminars, and more.

We are committed to growing our impact beyond Detroit and believe our model can and should be replicated in communities near and far. By scaling our Detroit program, we are creating a workforce from a population many overlook. Homelessness should not be a life sentence.
